Teargas as police disrupt #EndSARS memorial at Lekki tollgate

Police officers on Tuesday disrupted a memorial gathering at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, firing teargas to disperse participants who assembled to honour victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.

The incident affected several participants, including Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Lagos State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, and Funso Doherty, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

The gathering was organised by the Enough is Enough movement to commemorate those who lost their lives during the nationwide protests against police brutality in October 2020.

Participants had assembled at the tollgate for the memorial, which included a planned wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the victims.

However, the event was cut short when police officers deployed to the location fired teargas canisters to disperse the crowd before the ceremony could take place.

A video circulated by TheCable showed people scrambling to escape as teargas filled the area, disrupting the gathering.

The incident prevented the organisers and other participants from completing the planned tribute to those who died during the #EndSARS protests.
