Supporters chant ‘Obi-Kwankwado’ as Kwankwaso formally joins ADC

Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a development seen as part of the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso registered as a member of the party on Monday at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, located on Miller Road in the Bompai area of Kano. He was subsequently issued his ADC membership card in the presence of party leaders and supporters.

The event attracted a large gathering of political figures and supporters, with a viral video from the ceremony capturing enthusiastic chants of “Obi-Kwankwado” by members of the crowd, suggesting a possible joint presidential ticket between Kwankwaso and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Among prominent political personalities present at the occasion were the National Chairman of the ADC and former Senate President, Senator David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; Peter Obi; Senator Dino Melaye; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

The former Kano governor’s move to the ADC comes shortly after he announced his resignation from the NNPP, ending his association with the party.

In a statement confirming his departure, Kwankwaso said his resignation took immediate effect.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party with immediate effect,” he said.
He noted that leaving the party was a difficult decision due to his longstanding involvement and the support he enjoyed within the NNPP, but maintained that prevailing political realities necessitated a new alignment.
According to him, the current political climate requires strategic repositioning in order to pursue meaningful change in the country.
“As a committed and bona fide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make. However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the NNPP leadership, particularly the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, as well as other party organs for their support during his time in the party.
He also appreciated members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and his supporters across the country for their loyalty and commitment, assuring them that the collective pursuit of a better Nigeria would continue.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
