The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have met with the party’s governorship candidates in Bauchi, Sokoto and Borno states as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The meeting was held at Kwankwaso’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, and was attended by Ibrahim Kashim, the NDC governorship candidate in Bauchi State; Dr Shamsu Aliyu, the party’s candidate in Sokoto; and retired Admiral Sunusi Ibrahim, who is contesting the Borno governorship election on the party’s platform.
The NDC said the engagement was part of efforts to strengthen its structures and ensure effective coordination among its candidates ahead of the polls.
In a statement issued on Monday, the party said the meeting enabled its leaders to review the candidates’ level of preparedness and discuss strategies for the forthcoming elections.
According to the party, particular attention was paid to coordinated campaigns aimed at securing victory for NDC candidates across the different elective positions.
Other party leaders who attended the meeting included Buba Galadima, Kebbi State Chairman Alhaji Mustapha Umar and Sokoto State Chairman Alhaji Bello Yabo.
The NDC said the discussions also focused on campaign planning and strengthening collaboration between the national leadership, state chapters and candidates.
The engagement comes as the opposition party intensifies mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections, with its leadership seeking to establish a more coordinated political structure across the northern states.
Obi and Kwankwaso became the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates following the party’s special convention in Abuja in May 2026.
