As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks two years in office, former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations while urging Nigerians to temper their expectations, cautioning that the administration’s reforms will take time to yield results.
In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari praised Tinubu’s leadership at the midpoint of his tenure and advised Nigerians to remain patient and supportive as the government continues to implement difficult but necessary economic reforms.
Titled “Tinubu Gets Buhari’s Praise, Advice at Midterm,” the statement acknowledged the far-reaching challenges facing the country—especially poverty and inflation—which Buhari said “have hit the poorest families the hardest.” He emphasized that tackling these issues cannot be left to the government alone.
“The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” Buhari said, noting that progress would come gradually, not overnight. “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he added.
He warned against allowing “nettlesome domestic politics” to derail the Tinubu administration’s reform agenda, which he described as vital for Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth.
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu has rolled out a series of sweeping economic measures under his Renewed Hope Agenda—including the removal of petrol subsidies, liberalization of the foreign exchange regime, and repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. However, these moves have also triggered a sharp rise in the cost of living, sparking widespread public concern.
Despite the pain associated with the reforms, Buhari expressed optimism about the nation’s future, offering words of encouragement and a call for unity.
“I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care,” he concluded.
