The National Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on Nigerians to reject divisive politics and focus on electing leaders capable of addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.
Kwankwaso made the appeal on Thursday in a statement on his verified X account marking the commencement of the 2027 presidential campaign.
The former Kano State governor urged voters to consider the condition of the country and the future they wanted for the next generation when making their electoral choices.
He identified rising food and living costs, unemployment, high operating expenses for businesses and insecurity as some of the major challenges facing Nigerians.
“The rising cost of food and essential goods has placed enormous pressure on families. Millions of young Nigerians are searching for meaningful employment and opportunities, while businesses are struggling with high operating costs,” he said.
Kwankwaso expressed concern over the continued insecurity in several parts of the country, saying terrorism, banditry and kidnapping had continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
“Our farmers need security to return to their farms, our children need safe schools, and every Nigerian deserves to live without fear,” he said.
He called for urgent investment in critical sectors, particularly education, healthcare and infrastructure, while advocating stronger institutions and greater transparency in the management of public resources.
According to him, despite the difficulties confronting the country, Nigeria still possesses the human and material resources required to achieve prosperity and security.
Kwankwaso said what the country needed was leadership capable of making difficult decisions and placing the interests of citizens above personal or sectional considerations.
“What we need is leadership with the competence, courage and commitment to put the interests of Nigerians first,” he stated.
‘Our partnership is about Nigeria’
Kwankwaso also defended his partnership with Peter Obi, saying their decision to run together was motivated by a shared commitment to national development rather than ethnic, religious or personal interests.
“Our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria,” he said.
He added that the ticket represented a vision of a country where government would serve the people, merit would be rewarded and young Nigerians would have opportunities to build productive lives within the country.
The former governor appealed to youths, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals to become actively involved in the political process.
He urged citizens to demand accountability and measurable results from political leaders entrusted with public office.
Kwankwaso said the 2027 election presented Nigerians with an opportunity to determine a different direction for the country and urged voters to support the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and other NDC candidates.
He also called on political parties and their supporters to ensure that the campaign was conducted peacefully and responsibly.
“Let us campaign peacefully, responsibly and with the national interest at heart. Together, we can build a stronger nation, and Nigeria will be okay,” he said.
