Abiodun, Makinde meet to deepen ties on food security, cooperation

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called for closer economic collaboration between Ogun and Oyo States, with a particular focus on boosting food production and strengthening regional security.

Governor Abiodun made the call on Tuesday during a visit to his Oyo State counterpart, Governor Seyi Makinde, in Ibadan. The two leaders held a closed-door meeting at the Governor’s Office, where they discussed shared challenges and opportunities in agriculture and security.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Abiodun emphasised the long-standing cultural, historical, and economic ties between the two neighbouring states, describing the visit as a strategic move to foster mutual development.

“I came to meet with my brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, to discuss issues of mutual interest. Ogun State was part of the old Western Region, with Ibadan as the capital, and we’ve always had close cultural and economic links,” Abiodun said.

“In recent times, we’ve seen a growing number of investors coming into our subregion. Given our proximity and shared interests, this is the right time for both states to consolidate efforts—particularly in agriculture—as we work towards food security and self-sufficiency.”

He added that the discussion focused on deepening collaboration in the agricultural sector to make the region a leading food hub.

“We discussed how to work together to ensure we grow what we eat and eat what we grow. Our goal is to transform this region into the country’s breadbasket,” Abiodun stated.

He commended Oyo State’s strides in agriculture and said Ogun was also making significant contributions, especially in farming communities such as Odeda, Imeko, and Yewa North, which border Oyo State.

Highlighting the importance of security to economic development, Governor Abiodun praised the Southwest Security Network, Amotekun, for its role in intelligence gathering and enhancing the region’s safety architecture.

“Without security, there can be no development. Amotekun has been instrumental in strengthening the security framework in our region, and we must continue to support such initiatives,” he said.
