The family of former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, is in mourning following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai.
While details surrounding her passing remain limited, sources said she died on Friday afternoon.
Confirming the sad news, her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, took to Facebook, expressing grief and gratitude for her life.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away a few hours ago,” Bello wrote.
“She is the biological mother of our father, Mallam Nasir @elrufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul. May He bless the souls of the parents we have lost. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers. Thank you,” he added.
The family has not yet disclosed details of funeral arrangements.
The news comes as Nasir El-Rufai faces ongoing legal proceedings. He was recently arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on a 10-count charge related to alleged conversion of public property and money laundering, after reportedly spending about a month in detention.
At his arraignment, El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to all charges. Following submissions from both defence and prosecution, the Federal High Court in Kaduna adjourned the hearing of his bail application to March 31. The presiding judge, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, made the order after listening to arguments from both sides during proceedings on Tuesday.
Tributes and prayers have begun pouring in for the late Hajiya Umma, with family and well-wishers describing her as a devoted mother and grandmother whose life left a lasting impact on those around her.
The passing of Hajiya Umma adds a personal loss to an already challenging period for the former governor and his family.
