Former Benue State Governor and ex-Senator, Gabriel Suswam, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing lingering internal crises and what he described as the party’s loss of cohesion and direction.
Suswam communicated his decision in a letter dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State. The letter was made public by his Chief of Staff, Moses Ukeyima, via Facebook.
In the letter, Suswam said he could no longer remain in a party that had failed to address internal conflicts affecting its leadership, structure, discipline, and ideological clarity.
“I write to formally resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with effect from the date of this letter,” he wrote.
He acknowledged the role the PDP played in his political career, noting that the party provided him opportunities to serve as a member of the House of Representatives, Governor of Benue State, and later as a Senator.
“For these opportunities and the trust reposed in me at different times, I remain sincerely grateful,” he stated.
However, Suswam lamented that the PDP, once known for internal democracy and unity, had become entangled in persistent disputes that had been left unresolved for years.
“However, the party that once stood as a symbol of cohesion, internal democracy, and progressive opposition has, regrettably, become plagued by persistent and unresolved internal conflicts,” he said.
According to him, repeated efforts at reconciliation within the party had yielded little progress, leaving it trapped in what he described as a cycle of instability.
Suswam said he could not, in good conscience, continue his membership in a party whose current state no longer aligned with his personal convictions and desire to contribute to national development through a stable political platform.
“I believe that political parties must serve as platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, not arenas of endless internal warfare,” he added.
He expressed hope that the PDP would eventually resolve its internal contradictions, even as he stepped aside from the party.
