The House of Representatives has passed a bill seeking the establishment of state police, advancing it for further legislative action as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
The bill, identified as HB 617, was considered during Thursday’s plenary session and passed through a voice vote after deliberations by lawmakers.
The proposed legislation forms part of efforts to review Nigeria’s Constitution with the aim of restructuring the country’s security architecture in response to escalating insecurity, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The session was presided over by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and recorded the attendance of over 290 members of the House.
During proceedings, the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere (APC, Edo), moved a motion seeking the suspension of the House rules to allow consideration of a separate motion on the rescission of an earlier decision concerning the presentation of reports by the Committee on Constitution Review.
The development marks another step in the National Assembly’s push to reform the country’s policing structure, which has long been the subject of national debate.
