INEC fixes February 20 as date for 2027 presidential, NASS elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has set February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, with governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls slated for March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, unveiled the timetable at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, outlining the commission’s preparations ahead of the general elections.

The development comes as debates continue over the delayed passage of the amended Electoral Act before the National Assembly, raising questions about how the final legal framework may affect aspects of the election schedule.

INEC had earlier, on February 4, disclosed that it had concluded work on its timetable and submitted the schedule of activities to lawmakers. However, the commission cautioned that some timelines could be reviewed depending on when the amended law is passed.

Despite the uncertainty, INEC said it remains committed to early planning and transparent scheduling to ensure adequate preparation for the 2027 elections.
