Governor Abba Yusuf has nominated Alhaji Murtala Garo for appointment as deputy governor of Kano State, formally notifying the State House of Assembly to begin the confirmation process.
The nomination, conveyed in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, follows the resignation of former deputy governor Abdussalam Gwarzo in March.
Muhammad said the decision was taken in line with constitutional provisions, specifically Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to nominate a replacement in the event of a vacancy.
He added that the governor’s choice was the outcome of consultations with political leaders and other stakeholders across the state.
“Following wide consultations, the governor has transmitted the name of Alhaji Murtala Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation,” the statement said.
Garo, 48, is described as a seasoned politician with extensive experience in grassroots administration and state governance. Over the years, he has served in several key roles, including State Organising Secretary of his party and Special Adviser to the governor.
He was also elected chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, where he later rose to become Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State.
His public service record further includes his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, a position in which he played a role in coordinating local administration across the state.
Garo was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections, giving him prior experience in statewide electoral politics.
The state government said the nomination is aimed at strengthening the machinery of governance and ensuring continuity in policy execution.
The Kano State House of Assembly is expected to commence the screening process in the coming days, after which it will decide whether to confirm the nomination.
