In a surprising political development, the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term ambition, declaring unreserved support for his re-election ahead of the 2027 general election.
The endorsement came during the official flag-off of the party’s campaign for the upcoming Remo Federal Constituency bye-election and the inauguration of a 55-member campaign council for its candidate, Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole.
Speaking at the event, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele, said the decision to back President Tinubu was driven by the need to prioritise the collective interest of the Southwest and the nation at large.
“President Tinubu has shown capacity and fairness in leadership. He is not a sectional leader and does not condone electoral malpractice such as ballot snatching or rigging. We believe in supporting good leadership, regardless of political differences,” Ogundele stated.
He called on party members and supporters to mobilise for the bye-election, urging them to come out en masse to vote and to protect their votes through lawful and peaceful conduct.
Also speaking at the event, the party’s former governorship candidate and key leader in the state, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration in Ogun of failing the people despite increased federal allocations.
According to him, the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun has lost the goodwill of the people due to poor governance, disenfranchisement of voters, and failure to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
“In terms of grassroots development, the APC government has fallen short. The people have seen the difference between our administration and theirs. The PDP remains committed to peaceful and democratic change, not violence or voter suppression,” Adebutu declared.
He stressed the importance of a free, fair, and transparent election process in the forthcoming bye-election, warning that the consequences of bad leadership include economic decline, mismanagement of public resources, and rising unemployment.
Adebutu urged party loyalists to safeguard the electoral process by remaining vigilant and law-abiding, insisting that the PDP’s political aspirations must be pursued through legitimate and peaceful means.
The campaign council, made up of 55 members drawn from across the Remo Federal Constituency, was tasked with ensuring victory for the party in the bye-election triggered by the death of the former representative, Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who passed away in London seven months ago after a brief illness.
The PDP leadership maintained that Hon. Bolarinwa Oluwole remains the best choice to represent the constituency, promising that his victory would mark the beginning of a new era of accountable representation and grassroots empowerment.
As the political atmosphere heats up in Ogun State, the PDP’s unexpected endorsement of a sitting APC president is likely to further blur partisan lines and reshape alliances ahead of 2027.
