Maina hospitalized after collapsing on office staircase, aide says

Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), was hospitalised on Tuesday after collapsing on the staircase outside his office, his media aide, Emmanuel Nweke, has confirmed.

According to Nweke, Maina lost his balance due to complications from an untreated knee injury, hitting his head before losing consciousness.

“The incident occurred following complications arising from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to fall and hit his head,” Nweke said. “Medical personnel immediately administered first aid, and he was rushed to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent care. He is now under close observation.”

Doctors have reportedly advised that an air ambulance evacuation may be necessary if his condition does not stabilise soon. The family and medical team are closely monitoring his progress and have appealed to the public for prayers and respect for privacy at this critical time.

Maina recently completed his prison sentence at Kuje following his conviction for pension fraud. In November 2021, a federal high court in Abuja found him guilty of embezzling over N2 billion from pensioners, many of whom had died before benefiting from the funds. His eight-year jail term was upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023.

The former pension boss has previously suffered health scares. In December 2020, he collapsed in a courtroom during his trial, and prison wardens had to wheel him in. The court had also earlier directed the deputy comptroller of the correctional service to examine him to determine his health condition.
