The All Progressives Congress (APC) has selected Damilola Sonayon-James, a 40-year-old party chieftain and development professional, as the running mate to its Lagos State governorship candidate, Obafemi Hamzat, ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The announcement was made by Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the APC in Lagos State and Chairman of the Forum of APC State Chairmen, who said the choice followed broad consultations and a comprehensive screening process.

According to Ojelabi, the selection committee assessed prospective candidates based on competence, leadership qualities, grassroots appeal, loyalty to the party and their capacity to contribute to the continued growth and development of Lagos State.

He noted that Sonayon-James emerged as the preferred candidate due to her record of public service, commitment to the APC and leadership experience in both the public and private sectors.

"The party is confident that the Hamzat-Sonayon-James ticket possesses the vision, competence and energy required to consolidate on the achievements recorded in Lagos and advance the state's development agenda," Ojelabi said.

He called on residents of the state to support the APC in the forthcoming election, describing the party's ticket as one committed to continuity, inclusive governance and economic prosperity.

Sonayon-James currently serves as the APC Deputy Woman Leader in Lagos State and has built a career spanning more than 15 years in governance, public policy, institutional development, sustainability, stakeholder engagement and community development.

She previously held office as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where she spearheaded programmes aimed at promoting agricultural growth, women's empowerment, youth development, educational support and community welfare.

Beyond her public service roles, she has remained active in grassroots political mobilisation, youth mentorship and advocacy for greater female participation in leadership.

Popularly known among party supporters as "Sisi Eko of APC," Sonayon-James has become a familiar figure in community engagement initiatives across Lagos.

The APC said her nomination reflects the party's commitment to promoting women and young professionals in leadership positions while strengthening inclusive governance.

Party leaders added that the decision aligns with the APC's broader vision of positioning Lagos as a hub for innovation, economic opportunity and sustainable development.

With her emergence, attention is expected to shift to the campaign trail as the APC prepares for what is likely to be a keenly contested governorship election in 2027.
