The Federal Government has rejected claims that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed coup attempt in Niger Republic.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, described the allegations as false and deliberately designed to mislead Nigerians and damage the image of the country.
Enikanolaiye, in a statement issued on Thursday, said Nigeria had consistently opposed military coups and would not support any attempt to seize power through unconstitutional means.
He said the country remained committed to democratic governance, constitutional order and the promotion of peace and stability across West Africa and the Sahel.
The minister said the Federal Government had already made its position on the situation in Niger clear in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026.
According to him, Nigeria expressed deep concern over the developments in Niger and advocated a peaceful and inclusive process to restore stability and constitutional rule in the country.
He stressed that Nigeria’s longstanding historical, cultural and fraternal ties with Niger made peace and stability in the neighbouring country a matter of importance to the Federal Government.
Enikanolaiye said Nigeria wanted Niger and the wider Sahel region to enjoy peace, security, democratic governance and sustainable development.
He stated, “Nigeria will never support illegality or unconstitutional change of government anywhere, no matter who is involved or which country is concerned.
“While Nigeria is a proud and committed member of ECOWAS, it is unfair, mischievous and entirely false to suggest that Nigeria endorses or condones the military coup.”
The minister also urged Nigerians at home and abroad to disregard videos and other materials circulating on social media alleging Nigeria’s involvement in the failed coup.
He said such narratives were intended to sow discord, create unnecessary tension and mislead the public about Nigeria’s position on the political situation in Niger.
Enikanolaiye reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to constitutional governance and regional stability, saying Nigeria would continue to support efforts aimed at promoting peace and democratic order in West Africa.
