A fresh political controversy has broken out in Edo State after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alleged that its leaders, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, were targeted in an assassination attempt during a recent visit to the state.
The allegation has drawn a sharp response from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who condemned the attack but rejected claims of complicity, describing the development as politically motivated.
ADC Raises Alarm
According to the ADC, unidentified gunmen intercepted Obi’s convoy during his visit and opened fire after allegedly trailing him and other party members from the party’s secretariat to the residence of former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun.
Security operatives reportedly repelled the attackers, and no casualties were recorded.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the incident as a “coordinated hit” and linked it to previous warnings allegedly issued by the governor cautioning Obi against visiting the state.
“Today’s attack on Mr. Peter Obi and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress is a grave and disturbing development,” the party stated, adding that such violence represents a dangerous threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The ADC accused unnamed actors of attempting to intimidate opposition figures and suppress legitimate political activity, warning that violence and threats have no place in a democratic society.
Governor Denies Involvement
Responding swiftly, Governor Okpebholo condemned the incident and expressed sympathy for members of the ADC affected by the attack. However, he distanced his administration from the allegations and dismissed suggestions of state complicity.
In a statement, the governor said it was unfortunate that some individuals allegedly sought to exploit Edo’s peaceful atmosphere to incite unrest.
“As peace-loving citizens, we will not tolerate the importation of thugs and miscreants from outside the state under the guise of political engagements,” he said.
Okpebholo maintained that, as Chief Security Officer of the state, he would not allow Edo to be turned into a theatre of political violence. He further argued that the alleged attack could be aimed at tarnishing the state’s reputation.
“While investigations are ongoing and the motive remains unclear, I believe this development is intended to discredit Edo State and portray it in a negative light,” he stated.
The governor emphasised that governance should be anchored on performance and service delivery rather than political theatrics. He also reiterated that his administration remains open to constructive opposition but would resist what he termed political blackmail.
Growing Political Tension
The exchange has heightened political tension in the state, with both camps standing firmly by their positions. While the ADC insists the attack reflects a troubling pattern of intimidation, the governor maintains that the incident may be rooted in internal political disputes.
As investigations continue, political observers have called for calm and urged security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial probe to prevent further escalation.
