The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Rev. Fr. John Otache, parish priest of St. Margaret’s Parish, Ajegbe-Awume, in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Aondogu Orchia, confirmed the incident on Friday in Makurdi, saying the command had launched a full investigation and was making efforts to secure the priest’s release.
Orchia said security operatives were working to ensure the safe rescue of the cleric.
In a related development, the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo disclosed that Otache was abducted on October 13 while returning home from Otukpo.
The information was contained in a statement signed by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo.
According to Itodo, the priest encountered his abductors along the Otobi Amejo-Ajegbe Road in Ohimini Local Government Area.
He expressed sadness over the incident, noting that the Bishop of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, was deeply pained by the abduction.
The diocese appealed to priests, members of religious congregations, the laity and other well-meaning individuals to pray for the priest’s safe and speedy release.
It also called for prayers for other people being held captive by kidnappers across the country, expressing hope that they would return safely to their families.
The latest incident comes amid concerns over the safety of Catholic clergy and religious personnel in the area.
On July 9, 2026, a seminarian identified as Kelvin Ochai was reportedly abducted from the Bishop’s Residence in Otukpo town, Benue State.
Similarly, about three years ago, Rev. Fr. Anthony Adikwu, who served as parish priest of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Ajegbe-Awume, was kidnapped by unidentified armed men.
The latest abduction has renewed concerns over security in Ohimini and neighbouring communities, as efforts continue to secure the release of the priest.
