The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the first batch of results for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates.

According to the council, a total of 10,480 candidates sat the exam nationwide between January 28 and February 14, 2026. Of these, 3,429 candidates - about 33 percent - secured credit passes in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Overall, 4,598 candidates, representing 43.87 percent, obtained credit in a minimum of five subjects, with or without English and Maths.

The council highlighted a growth in participation, noting that 10,523 candidates registered for the 2026 exams, an 11.49 percent increase from the 9,438 registrants in 2025. The exams were conducted at 166 centres across the country.

WAEC also reported that 608 examiners were engaged in marking the scripts at centres in Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna between February 26 and March 13.

The examination included 43 candidates with special needs, including 11 visually impaired students, four with hearing impairments, and four albinos.

Female candidates slightly outnumbered their male counterparts, with 5,374 females (51.28 percent) and 5,106 males (48.72 percent) taking the examination.

So far, 8,418 candidates have had their results fully processed and released. However, 2,062 candidates - about 19.68 percent -still have a few subjects pending due to errors traceable to them, with WAEC working to complete the processing promptly.

In addition, the results of 75 candidates are being withheld over alleged cases of examination malpractice. Investigations are ongoing, and WAEC said decisions of the relevant committee will be communicated directly to the affected candidates.
