African Catholic Bishops hails Pope Leo XIV at one-year anniversary

The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) has congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his first anniversary as leader of the Roman Catholic Church, describing his pontificate as one marked by humility, compassion and a strong commitment to global peace.

In a statement issued from Accra, Ghana, SECAM joined the universal Church in offering prayers and thanksgiving to God as the Pope marked one year in office on May 8, 2026, coinciding with the Feast of Our Lady of Pompeii.

The continental Catholic body said Pope Leo XIV has, within his first year, provided “evangelical leadership” that continues to inspire hope across the world.

It noted that his consistent calls for peace, reconciliation, justice and human dignity have strengthened the Church’s voice in addressing global challenges such as conflict, poverty, forced migration and social injustice.

SECAM also reflected on the Pope’s apostolic journey to Africa, describing it as a defining moment that deepened the bond between the Holy See and the African Church.

According to the statement, the visit served as a sign of closeness and encouragement, leaving a lasting spiritual impact on local churches across the continent.

It said the Pope’s engagement with African communities strengthened faith, encouraged reconciliation, and renewed commitment to service among clergy and lay faithful.

SECAM added that the pontiff’s teachings and pastoral approach have helped to foster greater unity within the Church, while promoting collaboration among dioceses and encouraging a renewed missionary spirit.

The organisation said Pope Leo XIV continues to embody a message of hope and solidarity, urging the Church to walk together in synodality and remain faithful to the Gospel.

Reaffirming its support, SECAM said the Church in Africa remains fully united in prayer with the Holy Father and committed to his global mission.

It also placed his pontificate under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for divine guidance, strength and continued good health for the Pope as he leads the Catholic Church.

The statement was signed by Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa and President of SECAM, who extended prayers for many more years of fruitful service for the pontiff.
