A soldier serving with the Nigerian Army, Chukwuebuka, has been taken into custody over his alleged involvement in a robbery incident in Abia State, where a victim was reportedly forced to surrender N4.9 million.
The suspect, said to be attached to the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, was arrested with items believed to have been used in the operation, including two axes and a pair of handcuffs.
In a now-viral video, Ebuka was seen undergoing interrogation by a superior officer, during which he admitted his role in the crime and expressed remorse.
“It was an illegal action… it was not right,” he said.
According to his account, the victim was coerced into transferring N4,999,000. He also revealed that he carried out the act alongside another soldier identified only as Ifeanyi, whom he described as his senior colleague attached to the 13 Brigade.
Ebuka further disclosed that he received N1.5 million as his share of the stolen funds.
The interrogating officer condemned the act, questioning the soldier’s conduct and warning about the negative impact such behaviour has on the image of the military. He also criticised the use of weapons and restraints on the victim.
The suspect, who admitted knowing that his actions amounted to armed robbery, was seen pleading for mercy during the questioning.
As of press time, the Nigerian Army had yet to release an official statement on the matter, which has since sparked public concern over discipline and accountability within the force.
