A gunman opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening, killing four people — including a police officer — before apparently taking his own life. Another victim remains in critical condition, officials said.

New York Mayor Eric Adams, speaking during a late-night briefing, confirmed that the suspect died at the scene following the deadly attack at 345 Park Avenue, an office tower that houses Blackstone, KPMG, and the National Football League.

Shooter targeted lobby before heading upstairs

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspect, identified as Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, was seen on surveillance cameras stepping out of a black BMW armed with an M-4 rifle. He immediately shot a police officer in the lobby before “spraying the area with bullets.”

Tamura then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued firing before turning the gun on himself. Officers later found his body alongside his weapon.

A search of his vehicle uncovered a revolver, multiple magazines, ammunition, and medication bearing his name. Tisch noted that Tamura, who had a documented history of mental health challenges, held a valid firearms licence in Nevada.

Attack sparks panic in busy district

The incident unfolded around 6:00 pm (2200 GMT), during the evening rush hour, sending shockwaves through the busy Park Avenue corridor — a hub for corporate offices and luxury hotels.

Hundreds of police officers, some in ballistic gear, secured the area and deployed drones as terrified workers sheltered in place.
“Everyone was panicking,” said Shad Sakib, an employee in a nearby building. “We saw photos of the shooter walking through the same area we pass every day.”

Victims and investigation

Mayor Adams revealed that the fallen officer was a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant. Two other men and a woman also died. Authorities have not yet determined a motive, though the FBI is assisting in the investigation.

Mass shootings epidemic

The tragedy adds to the grim toll of mass shootings in the United States, where the Gun Violence Archive has recorded at least 254 such incidents this year alone.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she was briefed on the attack, while leading mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said he was “heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown” and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
