The Osun State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Adeyemo Mukaila, over the alleged repeated sexual abuse of a minor in Ikire, Osun State.
The suspect was said to be a friend of the victim’s grandmother, with whom the child lives, and allegedly exploited his frequent visits to the family’s residence to gain access to the girl.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement, saying the alleged abuse began in September 2026.
According to the police, Mukaila allegedly lured the girl to his residence under the guise of sending her on an errand. On getting there, he reportedly dragged her into his room, removed her underwear and sexually assaulted her.
Ojelabi said the suspect allegedly assaulted the minor again on October 2, 2026, the day she celebrated her birthday.
The police explained that the girl had informed Mukaila about her birthday and asked him for a gift. He reportedly gave her N1,000 but requested a gift in return.
The child subsequently bought biscuits for the suspect and took them to his workshop in the Ilupeju area of Ikire.
However, the suspect allegedly dragged her into a nearby bush and sexually assaulted her again when she arrived at the workshop.
The command said Mukaila attempted to escape through the bush after realising that some passersby had witnessed the incident.
The eyewitnesses reportedly rescued the girl and asked her what had happened. After she narrated her experience, they pursued the suspect, apprehended him and handed him over to the police.
The police confirmed that the suspect was in custody, adding that the Commissioner of Police had directed a thorough investigation into the allegations.
The command urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard children against sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation.
It also called on residents to report suspicious activities and criminal incidents to the nearest police station or through the established emergency channels.
