Former US President Joe Biden’s cancer has spread to his bones and has become increasingly painful and debilitating, his son, Hunter Biden, has disclosed.
Hunter made the disclosure in an interview published by the BBC on Saturday, while discussing the former president’s ongoing battle with prostate cancer.
“I wish he would complain more, because it’s not good — the cancer has spread,” Hunter said, adding that the disease had metastasised to his father’s bones “and further”.
“It’s very painful… very debilitating. Cancer is really hard. It’s really sad to watch,” he said.
Hunter, Biden’s only surviving son, also spoke warmly about his father’s role within the family, describing him as a central figure despite his health challenges.
“My dad is, to this day, the centre of our family. He’s the best father, the best husband, the best grandfather,” he said.
Biden disclosed in May 2025, four months after leaving the White House, that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.
At the time, the former president expressed optimism about his treatment and said doctors expected him to respond positively to medication.
“The prognosis is good, we’re working on it,” Biden had said. “It’s all a matter of taking a pill, one particular pill, for the next six weeks. And the expectation is we’re going to be able to beat this.”
Biden later said his treatment was progressing well and thanked members of the public for their prayers and support.
“I’m dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it’s going really well,” he said last month. “I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It’s meant the world to me and to Jill.”
The latest disclosure by Hunter indicates that the former president’s condition has progressed despite his earlier optimism about treatment.
Biden has in recent months spent more time with members of his family while receiving treatment. His health has remained a subject of public interest, having been closely scrutinised during the final months of his presidency and the 2024 presidential campaign.
The former president ended his re-election bid in July 2024 after mounting concerns over his age and fitness for office. Vice President Kamala Harris subsequently became the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee but lost the November election to Donald Trump.
Biden, who left office in January 2025, is scheduled to publish his memoir, Promise Me, America, in November.
The former president has largely kept details of his medical condition private, making Hunter’s latest comments one of the more significant public updates on the progression of his illness.
