Borno School Attack: 36 NECO candidates missing as govt releases names

The Borno State Government has released the names of 36 students who are still missing following the abduction of candidates from Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira/Uba Local Government Area during the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination.

The students were kidnapped on Monday when suspected armed men stormed the school and whisked away dozens of candidates writing their examination to an unknown destination.

In a swift response, troops of the Nigerian Army pursued the attackers and rescued 10 of the abducted students after a gun battle. However, several others remain in captivity.

Families of the missing students have continued to search for their children, while the state government has opened a register to document those still unaccounted for following the attack.

According to available records, 36 students have so far been listed as missing. They comprise 11 boys and 25 girls. The breakdown shows that one of the victims is in SS3, 17 are SS2 students, while 18 are in SS1.

The attack has heightened concerns over the safety of students and schools in Nigeria's North-East, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted educational institutions. Security agencies have continued efforts to track down the abductors and secure the release of the remaining students.
