Ex-Defence Spokesman, General Rabe Abubakar, Dies in Kidnappers’ Den

Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who died while in the custody of bandits weeks after he was abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.

The Katsina State Government confirmed the retired military officer's death, saying he passed away while being held captive by his abductors despite ongoing efforts to secure his freedom.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, the state government said the late general died from complications related to pre-existing health conditions.

According to the statement, Major General Abubakar, who reportedly suffered from diabetes and hypertension, was unable to survive the difficult conditions of captivity.

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” Mu’azu said.

“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.

“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.”

The commissioner described the development as a devastating loss not only to the bereaved family but also to Katsina State and the nation at large.

He noted that Governor Dikko Umaru Radda had expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting many communities across the country.

“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the statement added.

Governor Radda also extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.

Major General Abubakar and his wife were kidnapped while travelling through the Matazu axis of Katsina State on their way to attend a wedding ceremony.

The abduction drew widespread attention, particularly after a video emerged showing the retired officer and his wife in captivity.

In the footage, the kidnappers demanded the release of three individuals identified as Sani, Aminu and Nasiru, whom they claimed were being detained. They also called for the return of livestock allegedly seized from them.

Appealing for intervention, the general's wife urged the Katsina State Government and leaders from several local government areas to help meet the demands of the abductors in order to facilitate their release.

The retired military officer, who also spoke in the video, appealed for peace and understanding, while indicating that the kidnappers had expressed interest in dialogue.

His death has once again highlighted the growing threat posed by banditry and kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria, where criminal gangs continue to target residents, commuters and prominent individuals despite ongoing security operations.

A respected military officer during his years of service, Major General Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information and played a prominent role in communicating the activities and operations of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

His death in captivity is likely to renew calls for stronger measures to combat insecurity and protect citizens from criminal groups operating across the region.
