The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of a senior commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province, Abdussamad Ohida, also known as Anwar, during a joint security operation in Ondo State.
Ohida was reportedly killed on Sunday during an operation conducted in a forest around Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of the state.
Several other members of the terrorist group were also reportedly killed during the operation.
The operation was jointly conducted by personnel of the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services and the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, Major Innocent Olamale, confirmed the development to Punch by telephone on Monday.
“Yes, it was a joint operation which intelligently led to the execution of the ISWAP commander,” Olamale said.
The operation is believed to be part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to disrupt the activities of terrorist groups and prevent their expansion into parts of the South-West.
The circumstances surrounding the operation and the identities of other members of the group reportedly killed were not immediately disclosed by the Army.
