A Brigade Commander of the Joint Task Force in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, Brigadier-General O. Braimah, has reportedly been killed following a Boko Haram attack on a military formation in the area.
The insurgents were said to have launched the assault late Wednesday night, storming the base and engaging troops in a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Sources familiar with the incident said several insurgents were also killed during the confrontation as soldiers battled to repel the attackers.
A resident, Mallam Lawa Benesheikh, disclosed the development in a post shared on social media, stating that the insurgents attacked the base in large numbers.
“Innalillahi wa Inna’illaihin raji’un. Boko Haram has again, unfortunately, succeeded in eliminating the commanding officer of Benisheikh,” he wrote.
“This unfortunate incident occurred last night when the insurgents stormed the military formation in large numbers. May the souls of the fallen heroes rest in peace.”
The Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Hon. Zanna Ajimi, also confirmed the attack, saying the brigade commander was among those killed.
“Yes, we just left the military base, and I can confirm that the brigade commander is among the casualties,” Ajimi said.
Benisheikh, located along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, is considered a strategic location in the military’s counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.
