NGX Group clinches top African exchange honour at Euromoney awards

Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group) has emerged as Africa’s Best Exchange at the Euromoney Markets Awards 2026, earning recognition for its role in advancing digital innovation, market infrastructure and capital formation.

The award was presented at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London on October 15, 2026, in recognition of the Group’s market development achievements in 2025.

The recognition comes as Nigeria’s equities market continues to record significant growth, supported by increased trading activity, rising market capitalisation and initiatives aimed at broadening investor participation.

One of the Group’s key initiatives is NGX Invest, an electronic platform designed to simplify subscriptions to public offers and rights issues.

The platform was instrumental in the banking sector recapitalisation exercise, facilitating more than ₦2.8 trillion in capital raising.

By September 2026, NGX Invest had expanded its distribution network to more than 180 channels, including banks, stockbrokers and fintech companies. A WhatsApp subscription option has also been introduced to provide investors with an additional means of accessing public offers.

The Nigerian equities market posted strong gains in 2025, with the NGX All-Share Index advancing by 51.19 per cent. Equities turnover rose by 109.48 per cent to ₦5.96 trillion, while market capitalisation stood at ₦99.38 trillion.

The upward trend has extended into 2026. As of October 16, the All-Share Index had recorded a year-to-date gain of 59.07 per cent.

Equities turnover reached ₦7.82 trillion, up 73.78 per cent from ₦4.50 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025, while market capitalisation increased to ₦160.73 trillion.

Speaking on the award, Temi Popoola, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NGX Group, said the recognition reflected the Group’s sustained investment in the technology and infrastructure required to support capital formation.

He expressed appreciation to regulators, policymakers, listed companies, investors, stockbrokers and other stakeholders for their contributions to the development of the Nigerian capital market.

Popoola said the Group remained committed to expanding digital access to investment opportunities, enhancing market efficiency and strengthening connections with other African exchanges.

According to him, these efforts are aimed at making the Nigerian capital market more accessible, resilient and competitive, while improving its capacity to mobilise capital for businesses.

Beyond capital-market technology, NGX Group is pursuing sustainable finance initiatives through its NGX Net-Zero Programme (N-Zero).

The programme is being implemented in partnership with DEG Impulse gGmbH and Africa Foresight Group, with support from DEG Impulse’s develoPPP programme.

It seeks to help Nigerian businesses improve their climate preparedness, establish science-based emissions-reduction targets and develop transition plans that could facilitate access to climate-aligned financing.

The Group said the initiative had engaged more than 50 companies, with 19 enrolled as community members.

In another effort to improve market efficiency, Nigeria adopted a T+1 settlement cycle in June 2026, reducing the time required to settle securities transactions.

NGX Group is also strengthening engagements with other African exchanges to encourage cross-border investment and improve regional market integration.

The Euromoney Markets Awards recognise institutions that contribute to the development of financial markets through innovative infrastructure, trading platforms and systems that support efficient and resilient market operations.

The latest award adds to NGX Group’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the African financial market landscape and expand the capital market’s role in financing businesses and supporting long-term economic growth.
