Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has informed its customers that beginning May 1, 2025, the cost of SMS transaction alerts will rise from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.
In a notice issued on Wednesday, the bank attributed the adjustment to recent increases in telecom service charges by network providers.
The fee change applies to all customers who receive alerts via text message.
Ecobank Nigeria also announced a similar revision, raising its SMS alert fee from ₦5 to ₦6 per message, with effect from the same date.
The banks explained that the hike is in response to new tariff frameworks introduced by telecommunication companies, which have affected operating costs.
GTBank stated, “Dear Valued Customer, please be informed that effective Thursday, May 1, 2025, the SMS transaction alert fee will increase from ₦4 to ₦6 per message.”
“This adjustment is due to a recent increase in telecom rates as communicated by the telecommunication service providers.”
The bank encouraged customers to keep using SMS alerts for account security, while also providing an option for those who prefer alternatives.
“Transaction alerts help you stay in control of your account activity,” the notice added. “If you prefer not to receive alerts via SMS, you may update your preferences by completing the transaction alert form on our website and emailing it to [email protected].”
The adjustment comes amid rising inflation and cost pressures across Nigeria’s banking and telecom sectors, prompting several service providers to revise charges.
