The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced applications for the 2026 edition of its Startup Awards, with successful participants set to compete for a combined cash prize of $65,000.
The competition, now in its second edition, is aimed at identifying and supporting innovative businesses driving digital transformation, regional integration and sustainable value-chain development across West Africa.
Under the prize structure, the overall winner will receive $30,000, while the first and second runners-up will take home $20,000 and $15,000 respectively.
The initiative is being convened by the Directorate of Private Sector and Industry of the ECOWAS Commission and hosted in Abuja.
The Pan African Alliance of Small and Medium Industries (PAOSMI), in partnership with the Investment Promotion Agencies of West African States (IPAWAS), is jointly implementing the programme.
The organisers said about 60 startups from ECOWAS member states are expected to participate in the 2026 edition.
The programme will include startup clinics, masterclasses, pitch competitions, exhibitions, investor deal rooms, policy engagements and a post-award acceleration programme.
Apart from the cash rewards, selected businesses will receive opportunities for regional exposure, investor introductions, mentorship and networking with entrepreneurs, investors and policymakers.
They will also be provided with access to digital resources such as computers, accessories and software.
The ECOWAS Startup Awards were launched with the inaugural edition held in Niamey, Niger, on November 18 and 19, 2021.
Eligible sectors
The 2026 competition is open to startups operating in six priority areas.
They include education technology (EdTech), financial technology (FinTech), healthcare technology (HealthTech), agricultural technology (AgriTech), clean technology (CleanTech) and travel technology (TravelTech).
The organisers said eligible businesses must be developing solutions within any of these sectors and demonstrate the potential to create meaningful economic or social impact.
Who qualifies?
Applicants must be citizens of an ECOWAS member state and operate a startup that is registered and based in an ECOWAS country.
The startup must have been in operation for a minimum of two years and must have a functional product or service.
Applicants are also required to demonstrate market traction or the capacity to scale their businesses.
All required supporting documents must be submitted as part of the application process.
Application requirements
Prospective participants will be required to complete the application form covering Sections A to J.
They must also submit a valid national passport or ECOWAS-approved identity document belonging to the lead founder, alongside a recent colour passport photograph.
Where applicable, applicants must provide their business registration certificate.
Other requirements include two years of financial statements, management accounts or projections, a business plan of no more than 10 pages and a pitch deck limited to 10 slides.
Each applicant must also submit a one-minute pitch video in MP4, MOV or WebM format. The video must not exceed 100MB.
The organisers specified that the founder’s identity document should be submitted in PDF or image format and must not exceed 10MB, while the passport photograph must not be more than 5MB.
Selection process
The competition will have national and regional selection stages.
At the national stage, individual ECOWAS member states will nominate 50 per cent of their allocated slots, while the remaining slots will be filled through applications submitted directly by startups.
Consequently, startups will not be required to secure a national nomination before applying.
Successful applicants will proceed to the regional finals in Abuja, where they will pitch their businesses before an independent jury.
The jury will comprise professionals from the industry, investment and policy sectors.
The organisers said winners would be determined through a combination of scoring and consensus, while judges would be bound by conflict-of-interest and confidentiality rules.
Application deadline
Applications opened on August 3, 2026, and will close on August 31.
The next phase will feature virtual masterclasses and startup clinics from September 21 to 25.
The physical programme is scheduled for Abuja from September 28 to 30 and will include pitch sessions, exhibitions and investor deal rooms.
The regional finals and final pitches are scheduled for September 30.
