FBI captures six most-wanted fraud suspects, seizes nearly $17bn

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced the capture of six fraud suspects on its most-wanted list across four continents, while its international crackdown on scam networks has led to the seizure of nearly $17 billion.

FBI Director, Kash Patel, disclosed the developments in separate posts on his official X account on Sunday, outlining the results of the bureau’s global efforts to track down fugitives and dismantle criminal networks involved in online fraud.

According to Patel, the six suspects collectively spent more than 4,000 days evading law enforcement, while fraud cases associated with the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters list involved more than $2 billion.

He said the suspects had fled the United States in the belief that relocating abroad would shield them from prosecution.

“They were wrong,” Patel said, reiterating the FBI’s commitment to pursuing individuals accused of defrauding Americans, irrespective of their location.

In a separate update on Operation Blackout, the FBI director said the campaign against international scam networks had resulted in the seizure of nearly $17 billion, the arrest of hundreds of alleged scammers and the rescue of thousands of trafficked workers.

Patel added that the operation had also helped prevent substantial financial losses by alerting more than 10,000 Americans to potential scams before they lost their money.

He put the estimated losses averted at $670 million.

“We’re not just investigating these criminal enterprises.

“We’re dismantling their networks, disrupting their finances, rescuing victims, and holding those responsible accountable,” he said.

Patel described the scam centres as organised criminal operations that exploit vulnerable people and target Americans through cross-border fraud schemes.

He said the FBI would continue collaborating with international law enforcement agencies to disrupt the networks, track down suspects and bring those responsible to justice.

“To every criminal organization targeting Americans: Justice will find you,” he added.

The broader campaign has involved raids on suspected scam centres, efforts to dismantle digital infrastructure used to perpetrate fraud and investigations into the trafficking of people allegedly forced to work for criminal organisations.
