The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has lauded President Bola Tinubu for renaming the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the ministry’s Director of Press, Boriowo Folasade, Alausa described the gesture as a fitting tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy. The institution will henceforth be known as Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri.

“The Ministry of Education is deeply honoured that the sector has been chosen as the platform to permanently enshrine the legacy of the late President,” Alausa said.

According to him, Tinubu’s decision reflects “not only deep respect and empathy but also a conviction that education remains the foundation for national growth and renewal.” He added that the renaming of UNIMAID underscores the administration’s prioritisation of education as a key driver of sustainable development and a pillar of national identity.

Alausa further pledged the ministry’s dedication to sustaining the values of service, integrity, and excellence exemplified by both Buhari and Tinubu.

The announcement of the new name was made during a special session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) convened by President Tinubu to honour Buhari’s legacy. The event was attended by key national figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, ministers, and heads of government agencies, who all paid glowing tributes to the late former president.
