England captain Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player in 25 years to claim football’s most prestigious individual award after an exceptional season with Bayern Munich and the national team.

The 33-year-old striker emerged ahead of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé at the award ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday.

Kane’s victory comes after a prolific 2025–26 campaign in which he reportedly scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country, cementing his reputation as one of the most effective forwards in world football.

The former Tottenham Hotspur star scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich, helping the German club win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

He also finished as the Bundesliga’s top scorer for the third consecutive season, registering 36 goals in 31 league appearances. In the UEFA Champions League, Kane scored 14 goals as Bayern advanced to the semi-finals.

His remarkable output in front of goal, coupled with Bayern’s domestic success, strengthened his position in the race for the Ballon d’Or.

Kane’s contributions to England’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup further enhanced his credentials. The striker reportedly scored six goals as England reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Argentina, before defeating France in the third-place match.

The combination of his club achievements and international performances ultimately placed him ahead of a strong group of contenders.

Yamal, one of Barcelona’s standout performers, finished among the leading contenders but took home the Kopa Trophy, which recognises the best young men’s player.

Mbappé, meanwhile, was also in contention following another impressive campaign for Real Madrid.

For Kane, the award represents the culmination of a long journey from prolific Premier League striker to one of the leading figures in European football.

During his years at Tottenham, he established himself as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and one of the Premier League’s most consistent marksmen. However, major team honours remained elusive during his spell in north London.

His transfer to Bayern Munich in 2023 opened a new chapter, giving him the opportunity to compete for major trophies. His subsequent success in Germany has helped reshape perceptions of a career once defined by outstanding individual statistics without corresponding silverware.

By winning the Ballon d’Or, Kane joins an elite group of players to have received the award and ends England’s long absence from its winners’ list.

Former Liverpool and Manchester United striker Michael Owen was the last Englishman to win the honour, in 2001.

Kane’s achievement also represents a significant moment for Bayern Munich, whose domestic success and attacking strength have been central to the striker’s rise to football’s individual summit.

The England captain’s triumph underlines the importance of his goalscoring consistency and his influence at both club and international levels during the 2025–26 season.
