Former Liverpool and Bournemouth winger Jordon Ibe has been handed a 12-month community order after admitting to assaulting his former girlfriend in south London.
The 30-year-old former England Under-21 international appeared before Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where he was sentenced over an incident involving Amie Mayson outside her home in Lambeth last December.
The court heard that Ibe pulled one of Mayson’s braids during an argument, leaving her with a bald patch on her head.
Ibe was initially charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court in March. He subsequently changed his plea and admitted the offence.
Representing himself during Friday’s hearing, Ibe described his actions as a “serious mistake” and expressed regret.
“I understand it is wrong. I am genuinely remorseful,” he told the court.
He added: “I’ve had to look at myself in the mirror. I cannot change what I did but will take responsibility for what I do next.”
Magistrate Brij Kalia imposed a 12-month community order, requiring Ibe to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and undertake 27 days of rehabilitation activity.
He was also ordered to pay £764, comprising a £114 surcharge and £650 in court costs.
Ibe started his professional football career with Wycombe Wanderers before joining Liverpool. He subsequently moved to Bournemouth and represented England at Under-21 level.
