A suspected internet fraudster, popularly known as a ‘Yahoo boy’, has been arrested after ramming his Mercedes-Benz into a crowded market in Benin City, Edo State, injuring three traders.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the busy New Market area along Second East Circular Road. The suspect, reportedly driving at high speed, lost control of the vehicle while approaching from the Sakponba Road axis and ploughed into traders.
Confirming the incident on Monday, spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said no lives were lost, but three people sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
“The reckless driver is in custody,” Yamu said in a brief statement.
A trader, Sandra Osaro, who witnessed the crash, told reporters that the vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz with Lagos registration number LND 192 JZ, could have caused greater tragedy had the accident occurred on a busier market day like Tuesday or Thursday.
She described the incident as terrifying, adding that several others narrowly escaped being hit.
