‘New Masquerade’ actor Davis Ofor, who played Clarus, dies at 85

Veteran Nigerian actor Davis Ofor, best known for his role as Clarus in the popular 1980s sitcom New Masquerade, has died at the age of 85.

His death was announced on Tuesday by fellow actor Tony Akposheri in a tribute shared on Instagram.

Akposheri expressed deep sorrow over the loss, revealing that he had recently spent time with Ofor during the New Year celebrations, where they reminisced about their journeys and discussed plans for the future.

“Today, my heart is heavy. Davis Ofor, fondly known as Clarus from New Masquerade, is gone,” Akposheri wrote.

Recalling their last moments together, he said they welcomed the New Year with laughter and conversations about life, unaware that it would be one of their final meetings.

“We crossed into the New Year together, laughing, talking, sharing memories, and speaking hopefully about the days ahead,” he wrote.

Akposheri described the late actor as a man whose personality and warmth extended beyond his on-screen roles.

“You were more than a familiar face on screen. You were a friend, a brother, a man with warmth, humour, and a presence that could light up any space,” he said.

He added that it was difficult to accept that someone he had spoken with not long ago was now gone.

Ofor rose to prominence through his portrayal of Clarus in New Masquerade, a widely acclaimed comedy series that aired on the Nigerian Television Authority and became one of the most beloved programmes on Nigerian television in the 1980s.

His performance earned him national recognition and made the character of Clarus a memorable figure for generations of viewers.

Details about the cause of his death were not immediately available.
